Small idea for the future a Mirror Service

Many of Olilo users run Linux systems, etc so it would be nice to have a known good mirror within the Olilo network, to allow fast downloading of packages.
URL: mirror.olilo.co.uk

Possible Mirrors could include;
- Alma Linux
- Arch Linux
- Debian
- EPEL for EL based Distros
- Fedora
- MariaDB
- OPNsense
- PostgreSQL
- Rocky Linux
- Ubuntu

Running a mirror service is a fair bit of work.
Theres also so many now that it's not really a needed service the UK list for most of those project is really strong already. 2-3 Hops to a mirror is totally acceptable :)

Valid points, but I wouldn't say it's that much work, from having experience running them myself at my workplace.

Main reason not too would be cost, how many users do you need to use the mirror to save on the transit costs across LINX etc.

Well anything going via an Internet Exchange is free traffic.
All us service providers care is if stuff is hitting Paid Transit.

There are multiple mirrors avalible from hosts across LINX & LONAP that we can get to via Olilo/Velox. (Mythic being one of the bigger mirrors)
Your main cost is going to be storage and power.

This is why projects like the Micro Mirrors exist.
However not all projects can be catered for due to the way their mirror service is delivered. Most of the big ones are on the list.

That blog post is a pretty good read.

I thought LINX/LONAP was still 95th percentile billing+port speed, but I've not looked at their port costs. Good to know it's just the port you pay for 😊

Indeed then it's not worth it, other then the "cool factor" effectively.

LINX you pay for the port if you need bigger than 10G (10G is included in the membership fees with 2Gbps of Traffic included and then you pay ontop to have that policer increased).
So you pay for the speed you need and then can use that for what you want. Be it transit, PVLANs, MAPS etc.

Transit is 95th percentile which gives you the ability to burst but then anything over your allowance you get overusage bills. - It's these ports you use as a last resort for traffic you have no routes over a local IX for or can't get a PNI (Private Network Interconnect) for.

Yeah 95th percentile is ideal to allow for burst, I was on it originally with my colo but I got it changed as I was nearly hitting overages each month, even though I wasn't actually using much bandwidth over all. So last month I did a 95th percentile of 23.74Mb/s but I transferred just under 2TB of data (inbound+outbound). Yet the month before was 21.50mbit/s but I actually transfered an extra 100GB over last month. I had it changed last year to 10TB bandwidth for the same price, which for my colo works out a much better deal, due to my usage trends.

25mbit/s CDR is the same price as 10TB with my colo provider
